You are so correct when you say that being an artist DOES make you feel like you are always exposed. I can only liken it to being a stage actor, and feeling as though I was an open nerve. And yet, in order for me to allow for creative energy…I had to be open, vulnerable and exposed.
Like a blank canvas.

Alanis has always seemed especially… I don’t know, raw, or almost brutally honest. This video shows that so well – she does seem to go naked into the world, doesn’t she? There’s a sort of “hidden” song at the end of one of her songs…I’d have to look around to see which one I am talking about (i’m so bad with song names), but she talk about going to an ex’s house when he’s not there, and wanting to shower in his bathroom and take a nap in his bed…there is just something so immediate about it, and I think she has that rare gift for exposing those difficult things that are more universal than we usually admit to.
I’ve been a very cranky and difficult person lately, so I really know what you mean about feeling unlovable. But…there are fireflies outside.

As I have shared before from my former professor, favorite mentor, and now beloved friend:
“to be an artist takes hard work, more hard work, and having thick skin!”
Needless to say, she was right! Just last week I wanted to just stop…paint brushes and all. I can’t stop though..it fills me up! I think it is the same for you my dear creative friend.
Sometimes we just need “to be still” for a spell.
